Historical reenactment

One of the main activities of Chigot is historical reenactment. They are recreating historical events, battles or just aspect of people’s life ages ago. The main focus of the reenactments in Chigot is events in Bulgarian lands and the Balkans during 12-15 century. Historical reconstructions of clothing, weapons and the rest of the items which we use for this purpose, are an integral part of the historical reenactment. The most important thing for historical reenactments is the course of events to be followed as precisely as possible and to be presented to the audience in a way that best reflects the historical reality of the period. For this purpose, there have been held serious researches of historical sources, which can be written sources, illustrations of manuscripts, frescos, and the ideal case – archaeological finds used as a basis for reconstruction or precise replicas of objects. A very important point for historical reenactments is clothing to be made by authentic materials in authentic patterns, and weapons – to have the behavior and dynamics of the original ones. This is done so the reconstructed item or clothing to function in the same way as the ones used by our ancestors. The equipment we use is not a theater or movie requisite that only looks like real, but it is fully functional and therefore it gives valuable information about its use in the context of the event.

For safety of participants in battle reenactments, there are accepted and applied strict safety rules, including blunt edged blades, the best possible protection for the head, arms and body, and more.

Historical reenactments can recreate moments of daily civil life of medieval people. In Chigot we cook, sew, play medieval musical instruments, boil mead, play medieval games, practice old crafts and more. These activities are often presented at medieval camps all over the country.
